government failure is when government intervention produces a worse outcome than the market.

Yes, it shows that they can’t plan very well. This plan only lasted a matter of days, what if this health care reform gets through? How well planned do you think it’ll be?

Sandra asks…

Was the Cash for Clunkers program a success or failure? If a success, how so? If a failure, how so?

If was a success, then how would you measure its success when it came to the vehicle trade-ins at the car dealerships? If it was a failure, then how would you measure its failure as well?

Also, why was a car dealership forced to pour sodium silicate in its engine in order to destroy it? Didn’t this program raise the price of the used car significantly?

CSC101 Customer Service answers:

Some argue that it was a success because it was very popular, but I think that’s a very shallow argument. It’s pretty damn easy to give out “free money” that’s paid for by the taxpayers and future tax payers.

Instead, we have to look at what the program actually did. It took a lot of old cars of the road. I think that’s bad; these vehicles were more affordable, and now they don’t exist. Going forward, cars will be a bit more expensive for the poor.

Second it injected a lot of money into the auto industry, especially dealers (who were not included in much of the bailout). I think this is a really poor way to subsidize an industry. There are lots of more worthy industries we could think about injecting with cash, and a one-time jump serves mostly to clear out some stacked up inventory. It does not help them long-term.

So: failure.

Mary asks…

Was cash for clunkers a success, a failure or merely another poorly thought out Obama plan?
