Look for bad sellers (unpopular colors and/or engines…) and unsold last-year models.

Linda asks…

Looking at buying a new car, what websites can you recommend? Please see details.?

What websites should we search for pricing information, rebates, offers, etc. so that when we go to the dealership, we have the best shot at getting a good price. Any other recommendations are also welcome. We may also end up buying two new cars at the same time, do dealerships tend to give you more of a discount, if you do this?

I would check first Edmunds.com and see what their TMV value pricing is. They will tell you what other people are paying in your area so you know the average pricing. It also will give you information about invoice pricing and what it really means.

Also consumer reports does a great car guide, but I think the membership is paid, so you have to wait for the car edition to come out in magazine form, or get a membership online. They have some really good advice though.

My experience is that dealers are definitely more likely to give you a better deal if you are buying 2 cars, but it has to be the right dealer, and you have to know the values before hand or they may try to scam you and say you are getting a deal when you aren’t.

Be aware that right now the better gas mileage cars are probably going to be less “deal” oriented right now due to pricing.

The other thing to consider (and I got majorly burned on this one) is all of the “rebate” and cash back offers. This is well and good to getting you a good price for your car, but it also devalues that new car VERY quickly.

Eg. I bought a 2006 mazda. I had it for a year or so, less than 10K miles on it and I had to trade it on something else b/c of a bad knee and needing to get out of the stick shift. I lost more than $5000 on the car (that’s after depreciation) because the 2007′s had so many cash back offers, they were selling new ones, for what I owed on the one that was a year old.

Depending on your needs, I would look at Hondas as very good values that will be long lasting and retain their value, as well as good gas mileage. Currently I drive an Audi A4 that i *LOVE* but that’s only because I found a really SWEET deal. :) Good luck!

Betty asks…

just bought a new car need advice on my rights in texas?

I do not have the best credit and new in town, I went to a dealership and found a cute new 08 car that i liked.
Now that I’ve “slept” on it here are some things that are bothering me the morning after.

1. My new car (no previous owner) had 500 miles on it
2. The finance guy didn’t give me copies of my loan docs that I signed because he said the bank has to sign off on it then I will get a copy.
3. There was some charge of $3000 extra to the amount of the car, yet I signed something for a $2000 factory rebate.
He said it was “blah blah blah blah” that’s what it sounded like to me at least. But I’m waking up really bothered by it.
I plan on going in there today, but I know they will probably give me more of the same, so I was hoping to get some advice first.
Thanks
P.S I’m a single mom new to town that was renting a car (too expensive) I didn’t have many options getting financed, so In a way I’m happy I at least have a car that was cheaper monthly than renting, but at the same time I feel a bit ripped off. Help!

CSC101 Customer Service answers:

It sounds as if they sold you an extended warranty product—that could be the $3,000 add on. You actually have 72 hours from driving out to return the car and cancel the deal. If you aren’t comfortable keeping it, take it back. If you have an issue with the dealer, follow the TxDOT link below to file an official complaint.
